History of good Samaritan house |
|
In the fall of 1982 several area ministers joined together to address their concerns about the inadequacy of local programs to aid those in need. They agreed that a cooperative effort by area churches would prove more effective than the individual assistance programs of their respective churches. The ministers agreed to form a steering committee to establish the Good Samaritan Christian Services Center. The Rev. Joe Turner of First Presbyterian Church was selected to chair the steering committee. The group also recruited at least one lay person from each participating church to join the steering committee. Mary Lynn Brown of Amarillo provided guidance to the committee, sharing her knowledge of interchurch resource centers in southwest Texas. Steering committee members continued to meet weekly, developing a constitution, by-laws, volunteer structure and guidelines for assistance. St. Matthew's Episcopal Church offered the use of a house at 309 N. Ward which became the new location for the Good Samaritan House. |
